Rayward House, Tirranna
New Canaan, CT 1955
Built in 1955, Tirranna is a classic Wright hemicycle design overlooking the Noroton River in New Canaan, Connecticut. Tirranna, from the Aboriginal word for running waters, sits on a waterfall surrounded by an oasis of 15 acres of natural beauty. Original gardens and plantings were designed by Frank Okamura and Charles Middeleer. The impeccably maintained house is an excellent example of authentic Wright architecture on a grand scale, with soaring glass walls, gold leaf chimneys and a collection of the finest wood finishes. The house has double master baths, a rooftop observatory with telescope and an interior courtyard, caretaker’s suite, guest studio, pool, tennis court, large barn and sculpture paths through the woods down to the river. These are just a few of the surprises around each corner. This truly one-of-a-kind house is a must-see for the mid-century aficionado.
