Hollyhock, Aline Barnsdall House
Los Angeles, CA 1919
Hollyhock House is a transitional structure, a bridge between the Prairie and textile block houses. Oil heiress Aline Barnsdall commissioned Wright to design a complex of residences, theaters and shops for artists. Hollyhock House (Barnsdall’s private residence), two guest residences and a springhouse were the only buildings completed. The quadrangular plan encloses a large garden and a circular pool. The central block of the house contains an entry loggia and a living room flanked by a library and a music room. Two opposing wings contain the bedrooms, dining room and service areas. In 1927, Barnsdall donated Hollyhock House to the City of Los Angeles. In 2014 it reopened for regular touring after a three-year restoration.
