Just wanted to spread the word that I will be giving a slide show about "The Building of the Pauson House" at 4 p.m. Sat. March 31 at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. It will include many images that are not in the book. Admission is free; check out: http://modernphoenix.net/hometour/

Wish there was a way to see your presentation online. Frustrated in NC. |

Ditto ! Congratulations on your effort, in any event -- and I hope there's a gratifying response.
I know nothing about such things, but: Is there an A/V department at the local college, with someone who could video your presentation and present it -- live (?) -- online, somehow ? Is anybody doing that, these days ?

Just a quick note about the excellent presentation by Mr. Green this afternoon. About 35 - 40 attendees. Great photos of the Pauson family, their history and of the house. Photos of the family house at 2510 Jackson Street / SFO. The Pauson Dept Store (Men's Clothing) and ceramics, oil paintings and wood block prints done by Rose. A letter from FLW regarding the FLW signature tiles. Construction photos; Jean watching apprentices hoist a Saguaro. Other construction photos of the house in various stages.
Some examples of Aaron Green's work - Union City Civic Center and the Harber House in Carmel. During the presentation there was a 'reading' of several letter of correspondence between Rose and FLW. The reading were expertly executed by Suzanne Pullen and John Genette. Alan estimated the square footage at 2,500 although he commented that no figure exists to substantiate this.
And finally, a great nod to all the Wright Chatters ! Alan commented that over 61 chat pages exist discussing the Pauson House and he further explored the two mysteries - "perf's" and the "pump house design". He finished with a b/w photo of a pump house that I have never seen. Made of redwood and desert stone - he wasn't sure where the photo came from, but it looked nothing like the executed structure.
In all, a very well done presentation. Great to see the plans and photos projected on the big screen.

Thank you so much. Good reporting is worth its weight in . . . something. Signature Tiles, maybe. I'm pleased to hear the particulars, and wish I could have been there with you. A rare pleasure, to be sure . . . ?

Yeah, a mystery. On the way home I began to think ... Might the pump house have been the first part of the complex to be constructed? After all, water was a necessity if stone and concrete walls were going to be constructed. That might be the reason it looked slightly weird ... no landmarks or other construction to indicate where it was located.
Other points: The photo was taken head-on, slightly below the top of the roof, not from above or on the entrance road below, as were all subsequent photos. Besides, the photographer seemed to be just feet away from the roof, which made the image appear almost like a severe close-up. The roof all but filled the print, so most of the horizon line was blocked ... One lone hill appeared in the far distance, slightly to the left of the roof.
It's also possible that the carport excavation hadn't been started, or, that it could not be seen, being situated directly behind the roof.
We need the photo here ... to study the possibilities. |

It might have indeed been the 'first' build to provide water to the construction site, then disassembled. At first I thought it might have been a photograph from T-West, but I have never been aware of a small pump house there.
Maybe Mr.Green can supply the photo for further scrutiny..... |

A couple items of passing interest:
Several members of the audience reported the recent collapse of the last remaining bit of the Pauson House ... the massive upper bedroom fireplace pylon, which had been moved prior to the destruction of the remaining Pauson House ruins shortly before 32 Street was pushed through the site. The Pylon has been used to mark the entrance of a nearby housing development. Collapse apparently occurred just a few days ago.
Another curiosity ... Apparently no member of the Pauson family (with the possible exception of AGG) ... or the Grant family ... were familiar with the strong family resemblance between their two house plans: the Pauson House begun in March 1940, and the Grant House in October 1949.
Perhaps AWG and Donna Grant Reilly should exchange books. |

Thanks for the report on that presentation, m.perrino. It sounds as though AWG did a great job with it, and that it was well worth seeing. I wonder if AWG might consider the idea of making the same presentation at the FLWBC Conference in Mason City this fall. Might sell quite a few of his books to such a captive audience with such a strong presentation.
Allan, are you out there? If so, what do you think of this idea? |

Thanks for the kind words on my presentation. Having the two actors reading the letters really livened it up. I'd certainly consider doing it again, though between my baseball schedule and harvest at the winery, fall is a busy time.

| This may have been stated before earlier on this lengthy thread, but what was the approximate square footage of Pauson? |
