HOUSE HISTORY: In 1954 Frank Lloyd Wright presented Mr. and Mrs. Don E. Lovness with four design variations of his Usonian houses for the Lovnesses’ twenty acres of serene lakefront property in Minnesota.

Armed with the designs, Virginia and Don and their two small daughters built their dream home or “The Studio”, over the next two years. Frank Lloyd Wright took an active and ongoing role in the design of both the interior and exterior of their first home.

The Studio is a 1,800 square foot home complete with a children’s wing, a master suite and large and spacious living room overlooking the lake.

The couple did not stop there, however, as they decided to complete the second house or “Cottage” a few years later. The cottage is substantial and is anchored in the landscape as it sits high looking over the peaceful lake.

The 800 square foot cottage features a bedroom as well as a unique loft style sitting room as well as a spacious living room. In addition, there is a lovely deck with amazing views of the lake and surrounding land.

The Lovnesses’ planted indigenous trees throughout the twenty acres. The Studio and the Cottage – are the only interruption in the landscape that inspired them in the first place. The houses are as Wright intended them to be – a natural reorganization of the landscape’s own materials: stone and wood.
