HOUSE HISTORY:
Foremost of
Riverside
's architectural works, the celebrated Coonley House sits at Coonley and Bloomingbank Roads. Of stucco and ornamental tile, it was built from 1908-1912, establishing once and for all Frank Lloyd Wright's brilliance in residential design. It is also known as a zoned plan with linked functional units spreading out over the extensive grounds. Wright described the Coonley House as his “best house” in his 1932 autobiography.
In 1950 the home was divided severing the Public Space and the Servants' wing from the Bedroom wing. The house sustained many alterations from 1950-2000 and suffered from deferred maintenance. In 2000 it was purchased by the current owners.
Currently, this five bedroom, five bathroom home is approximately 6,000 square feet and sits on more than one acre of land. In addition, there is a magnificent reflection pool outside the first floor “play room” and a charming “summer house” on the same terrace.
A complete restoration of the Public Space and Servant's wing of the Coonley House was undertaken and completed by the current owners from 2000-2004.
At every turn, the current owners were faced with extensive restoration projects. The mechanicals of the home had to be brought to current day standards while retaining the beauty and integrity of Wright's design. Kitchen and baths (all five) were renovated with taste and an eye towards their 1912 origins. Even the landscaping was honored when the owners found the original Jens Jensen plans.
It was in restoring the Wright architectural elements that the current owners showed their respect for the home and Wright. Original tile floors were brought back to former glory when the owner cleaned them by hand. Wright cabinets were sometimes moved but preserved and restored. The mural in the Living Room was recreated by artisans from a small piece that had not been destroyed. All home restoration was researched from color to texture to authentic historic detail. The task is complete, stunning, and a tribute to Wright and the current owners. They have made it possible for a new owner to become part of the legend of this architectural masterpiece.
Qualified buyers may also inquire about rental of the property for $6,500/month.
